Started as a transport pilot before being posted to the Guards Fighters in 1944. Flew over 180 combat missions before being shot down and captured in July 1944. Deviataiev executed an amazing escape in February 1945, stealing a Heinkel He 111 bomber and promptly returning to Russia.
